Lima Expresa, subsidiary of VINCI Highways and operator of two expressways in Lima, just unveiled its annual road safety results, which demonstrate again this year the transformative impact it has had since joining the VINCI Highways network in 2016. Over this 8-year period, Lima Expresa has achieved a remarkable 74% reduction in accidents, improving road safety and the driving experience for millions in Lima.

In 2024, accidents on the Vía de Evitamiento and Línea Amarilla expressway decreased by 8% compared to 2023.

Technological and collaborative initiatives

These positive results are driven by VINCI Highways' ambitious action plan and sustained investment in road safety. In 2024, the action plan at Lima Expresa included:

  • Launching AI for incident detection: the deployment of Peru’s first AI-powered automatic incident detection system has allowed Lima Expresa to reduce incident detection times from 15 minutes to under five minutes for 95% of cases.
  • Activating new partnerships: Lima Expresa strengthened its cooperation with ATU and PNP. The new initiatives focused specifically around bus stops and public transport lanes, resulting in fewer accidents and improved traffic flow.
  • Investing in road pavement: in addition to ensuring excellent road conditions, Lima Expresa completed the replacement of asphalt on the Vía de Evitamiento, which reduced vibrations and improved driving comfort.

To continue this trajectory of progress in 2025 and ahead, Lima Expresa will focus on drivers' behavior and prevention of mechanical issues. These two issues now account for the majority of remaining accidents.

Raul Diaz, CEO of Lima Expresa, declared: “Reducing accidents by 74% since 2016 means that we have avoided over 270 accidents. This is an impressive figure. It is a powerful reminder of the scale and importance of what we do every day. Our investments and solutions benefit drivers on the daily journeys and also help create a safer and more resilient Lima for everyone who lives and drives here."
