To celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June 2019, VINCI Concessions reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable mobility made by its entire network of air, rail and road infrastructure. Protecting biodiversity is a central pillar of VINCI Concessions’ environmental policy. Through its subsidiaries, the company systematically acts to preserve natural habitats, to ensure that wildlife can continue to move around safely, and to reduce carbon emissions. Read on for an overview of how World Environment Day was celebrated across the VINCI Concessions network.

In France, passengers and staff at Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport could hop on exercise bikes that were set up in Terminal 1. For every kilometre cycled, one euro was donated to the French society for the protection of birds, LPO, a non-profit association that is well known for its work to protect biodiversity and the environment.

In Greece, the Athens Corinth-Patras motorway pledged to preserve and protect wildlife — including bats in particular — by supporting the EU LIFEnature project.

In Colombia, members of the teams working on the Bogotá—Girardot highway planted trees along unit 8 of the road — a fun and educational way of celebrating biodiversity.

In the Dominican Republic, the six VINCI airports rolled out initiatives in line with their environmental strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Workshops, competitions, training sessions and tree planting events were organised to raise awareness among all of the airport’s stakeholders of the need to protect the environment.

In Brazil, the Salvador de Bahia airport also celebrated the occasion by raising environmental awareness among both passengers and staff. Employees attended training on sorting waste and reducing the use of plastic, and passengers and students from local state schools were invited on guided tours of the waste management units and wildlife protection facilities.

In addition to these initiatives, the entire VINCI Concessions network came together, rolling out a number of initiatives across its 70 mobility structures to get all of its stakeholders involved.
