On the Isle of Wight (United Kingdom), Island Roads, a subsidiary of VINCI Highways, has recently taken a major step forward in its quest for environmental sustainability.

Responsible for operating and maintaining 821 kilometres of road, 767 kilometres of pavements and 12,000 street lights – the island’s entire public road network – Island Roads used its 250,000th tonne of Recofoam, a surfacing made from 85% recycled materials, to upgrade Whitwell Road near the village of Godshill in the south of the island.

Locally manufactured, this revolutionary resurfacing technology, devised by Eurovia UK, minimises the carbon footprint of the works while making significant savings on the costs of landfilling and transporting the old surfacing.

In addition to this type of environmental initiative, VINCI Highways also deploys a large number of societal initiatives in the region. Through its Isle of Wight Foundation, Island Roads, for example, has made a £10,000 donation to support initiatives to assist the communities most affected by the socio-economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.
