Lima Expresa becomes the 1st motorway concession to reach carbon neutrality in South America
Lima Expresa (a VINCI Highways’ subsidiary) becomes the first motorway concession in Latin America to reah carbon neutrality. Between 2018 and 2021, Lima Expresa reduced its direct emissions by approximately 40%. These reductions were made possible through the implementation of an energy efficiency plan relying on LED technologies, electric vehicle endowments, renewable electricity procurement, and the future installation of solar panels in its tollbooths, among others. To compensate what can not be avoided, Lima Expresa has offset 700 tons of carbon with 708 credits from the Cordillera Azul National Park. For these actions, the company obtained the fourth star of the program “Carbon Footprint Peru”, awarded by the Ministry of Environment.
LIMA EXPRESA has become the first road concessionaire in Peru to neutralize its emissions thanks to the work carried out over the last five years. For example, a strategy to reduce carbon emissions has been implemented by optimizing the lighting of emergency exits, lighting fixtures and temperatures in electrical substations.
The latest action is the purchase of 708 carbon credits from Peru’s National Service of State Protected Natural Areas (SERNANP) from the conservation of the Cordillera Azul National Park and its impressive biodiversity. These carbon credits aim to neutralize the 700 tons of carbon generated by LIMA EXPRESA in the year 2020. This carbon offset is part of the company’s plan to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and contributes to the conservation of the Cordillera Azul National Park by protecting more than 1,500 trees.
For this action, LIMA EXPRESA was awarded the fourth star in the Carbon Footprint Peru program promoted by the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), which recognizes the efforts of public and private organizations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
VINCI Highways and LIMA EXPRESA are committed to the preservation of our planet. Since 2017, we have reduced our carbon emissions by 40% and today we have achieved being the first carbon neutral road concession. We will continue to work to reduce the footprint and support Amazon conservation.
Laurent Cavrois, General Manager of LIMA EXPRESA
We welcome with great joy the participation of LIMA EXPRESA in the conservation of the Cordillera Azul National Park through the carbon credit mechanism, which allows the private sector to participate in climate action and forest conservation. Without a doubt, they are an example for other private sector actors in Peru to follow.
