In Slovakia, VINCI Highways will convert to led lighting to reduce energy consumption

In line with VINCI Concessions’ commitment to environment to halve its carbon footprint, concessionaire of the R1 PR1BINA project, GRANVIA, and operator Granvia Operation, will replace the lights on the R1 PR1BINA expressway and the Banská Bystrica bypass with LED technology in order to reduce energy consumption.

In total, more than 280 outdoor lamps that used high-pressure sodium bulbs will be replaced in the coming weeks on the R1 PR1BINA expressway and Banská Bystrica bypass, both located around Bratislava, the capital and largest city of Slovakia.

New lamps equipped with LED technology will bring several advantages. The switch to LEDs will reduce yearly carbon footprint by the equivalent of seven passenger vehicles driven for one year (equivalent to 35 700kg of CO2). Another great advantage of LED lights is the increase in life expectancy of individual light bulbs, which is estimated between 15-18 years while the original high-pressure sodium lamps had a lifespan of 2–5 years.

And for the drivers and maintenance staff, this will mean a better overview on the R1 expressway and the bypass around Banská Bystrica. Indeed, LED lights ensure a more efficient illumination of the road with less light scattering, increasing the comfort for the drivers and maintenance staff.

This investment is a continuation of other environmental initiatives led by VINCI Highways and PR1BINA in Slovakia, such as the installation of educational panels on local species or the establishment of beehives near the R1 motorway, to promote biodiversity. The switch to LEDs also perfectly highlights VINCI Concessions commitment to ecological transition, with LED conversion already achieved or ongoing on its highway network in Greece and Russia.
