Rennes and Dinard airports continue to deploy VINCI Airports' environmental action plan and join the 'Aéro Biodiversité' association
Committed since 2016 to the deployment of VINCI Airports’ environmental action plan, already ISO 14001 certified and Airport Carbon Accreditation (level 2)*, the ‘Société d’Exploitation des Aéroports de Rennes et Dinard’ (whose two shareholders are the Ille-et-Vilaine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), 51%, and VINCI Airports, 49%) is going to join, along with the Brittany Region, the owner of the airports, the Aero Biodiversity association.
The aim is to assess the flora and fauna of the two platforms, using proven scientific protocols, and to gain a better understanding of the wildlife found there in order to better protect it. Aero Biodiversity’s scientific teams will come to the airport several times a year and volunteer employees from both airports will be able to be associated and trained to carry out surveys and record them.
The data collected under the authority of the association’s scientific committee, many of whose members come from the National Museum of Natural History, will provide a better understanding of biodiversity. In addition, the data collected will be shared in order to enrich the existing databases in this field, particularly in Brittany.
This initiative represents a new stage in the deployment of VINCI Airports’ environmental strategy at Rennes and Dinard airports. While an airport is made up of around 70% of green spaces and uncultivated grasslands, VINCI Airports is systematising, throughout its network, the carrying out of biodiversity inventories (which recently gave rise to an exhibition on the avian species present on the network’s French airports) and working in partnership with scientific experts, such as with the French Beekeepers’ Union since 2018.
Rennes and Dinard airports have also implemented a mowing plan for grassy areas and favour late mowing to encourage the development of biodiversity. A previous study highlighted the movement and nesting habits of the various mammals and birds present on the two platforms.
In addition, the maintenance of the two airports is carried out without any phytosanitary products, in order to preserve the natural environment.
Nathalie RICARD, Director of Rennes and Dinard airports, is delighted with this partnership: “We are very happy to initiate this partnership with Aéro Biodiversité. The first actions on the ground will start in spring 2022 at Rennes and Dinard airports. Our volunteer employees are very interested in this subject and are eager to get involved to better protect the various species present at our airports: birds, earthworms, snails and other species.”
