Peru: LIMA EXPRESA awarded "Carbon Footprint Peru - Level 3" by the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment
In Peru, LIMA EXPRESA, a VINCI Highways subsidiary operating the Lima ring road, has been promoted to Level 3 of the “Peru Carbon Footprint” certification, a program recognizing the efforts made by public and private organizations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Between 2019 and 2021, Lima Expresa has managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by approximately 27%, thanks in part to the implementation of an intelligent automatic lighting device along the Linea Amarilla tunnel and with the replacement of the fleet with 9 100% electric vehicles.
LIMA EXPRESA is continuing its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Peruvian capital Lima. In this context, the VINCI Highways subsidiary has been awarded the third star in the Carbon Footprint Peru program promoted by the Peruvian government’s Ministry of the Environment.
The program recognizes the efforts made by public and private organizations to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The third star recognizes that the concessionaire has identified its emissions, reduced them through the implementation of energy efficiency projects and that the result has been verified by an external company, which in this case was SGS.
The Carbon Footprint Peru level 3 certification, granted by the highest governmental entity in environmental matters in Peru, concludes that the concessionaire in charge of the Vía de Evitamiento and the Línea Amarilla expressway, has reduced its CO2 emissions compared to 2019 by approximately 27%.
Projects that combine development and sustainability
To achieve this recognition, LIMA EXPRESA presented two projects to reduce its CO2 emissions. Both are firsts in the country and demonstrate the commitment of LIMA EXPRESA and VINCI Highways to help reduce pollution in the capital, which was recently ranked as “the Latin American city with the worst air quality” by the University of Chicago, USA.
The first is focused on optimizing the lighting of the emergency exits of the Grand Tunnel of Lima Expresa, integrating an automatic lighting system and installing photoluminescent ribbons. The second is called 100% Green Energy Tunnel, in reference to the LIMA EXPRESA Grand Tunnel which consumes 100% renewable energy.
“This recognition is aligned with VINCI Concessions’ and VINCI Highways’ global objectives, and encourages us to continue working for the people of Lima to increasingly reduce our CO2 emissions, bringing us closer to becoming the first carbon neutral road concession. As a result, we will be seeking the fourth star in the coming months by neutralizing our 2020 emissions. We will continue to develop initiatives to reduce our emissions, such as the renewal of our fleet, which has 8 100% electric vehicles“, commented the General Manager of LIMA EXPRESA, Laurent Cavrois.
