In Peru, VINCI Highways is innovating by promoting recycling as a means of payment
Pex, the Peruvian automatic toll collection subsidiary of VINCI Highways, announces the launch of the “Green Recharge” initiative, which enables its users to pay for toll and parking services in Lima by recycling plastic bottles. In addition to supporting the circular economy and offering an innovative means of payment, this initiative is also intended to show solidarity as the bottles recovered in this way will be distributed to local recycling companies impacted by the pandemic.
Lima drivers and users of Pex services can now deposit plastic bottles in a recycling robot called IRBIN which, thanks to artificial intelligence, evaluates the value of the materials deposited and automatically assigns “green credits” for each bottle deposited. This amount can be consulted directly on the mobile application and can then be used as a means of payment for the various services offered by the VINCI Highways subsidiary in Peru, such as subscriptions to Lima’s expressways or parking in the Real Plaza parking lots in the Peruvian capital.
The objective of this initiative launched in collaboration with the startup “Cirsys” and the NGO “Recicla, Pe! “is to collect approximately 75,000 plastic bottles in three months.
Since the acquisition of its subsidiary Pex (operator of road transactions and customer relations) at the end of 2016, VINCI Highways has recorded a growth of more than 100% in the number of its e-subscribers in Peru. The digitization of transactions is in line with the objective of making traffic on the expressways in Lima, for which VINCI Highways holds the concession, more fluid and secure.
This initiative is also further proof of VINCI Concessions’ commitment to developing positive mobility, particularly in favor of the environment and the circular economy.
